One way they had become one of the most powerful families in Italy was through violence and ambition .Clawing their way past others who were no part in what they what doing what so ever. And they had people who wanted to stay close to them in order to not deal any consequence's .
Another way was that the family had joined forces with a catholic church which was a powerful force during the renaissance.They were more of the banking  than anything else and if you dint pay your loans you were guaranteed hell.
